What can I say about this past week except that I don't want to repeat it. We were real busy with the usual day to day activities, then in the middle of the night, Emmett got the flu. Then to compact it all, he got severely dehydrated. Oh did I mention that Scott was traveling yet again for the 3rd week.
After 2 1/2 days of Emmett not eating, I decided to take him to the doctor, who in turn had a bed ready for him at the hospital. When we got checked in, they took us to the room where they put the IVs in. Four pokes and an hour later, they finally found a vein that would work and not blow. So here is a picture of Emmett with the IV in his arm trying to enjoy himself.
After 24 hours of fluid in Emmett's arm and with him drinking pedialite, the doctor decided to unplug the IV fluids to see if he could maintain hydration on his own. Only to find that later in the evening when we should have been at home, we were still in the hospital. The doc had the nurses plug the IV back in only to find that this vein had blown as well, so back to the "special room" we went. And again 4 pokes and an hour later, the nurse found a vein in his head. Normally I do real well holding Emmett through all his tests, procedures, and even needle pokes. But this time, when the nurses were going for the vein in his head, I passed out. I started to get real light headed and told the nurses that I needed to sit down. Down in the chair is where I went. And through all of this, Emmett still managed a smile to each nurse and doctor who came into the room to examine him. Emmett is such a special spirit. His forgiving nature is what helps me get through each poke and test that Emmett has.
Because I was home alone with the 4 kids, my parents so graciously came to my rescue for a day before they needed to head out of town. The dreaded thing then had to happen, I called Scott and he had to come home early from his business trip and take care of the children. Thank goodness he did.
During all the stress of Emmett, I realized that Garhett needed to make a cake with his dad for the Blue & Gold dinner. Below is the cake they made. Even though the people at pack meeting didn't realize that it was a sand castle, he got an award for the most original "circus tent". I was sad to miss the festivities, but was glad that Scott could make it home to take Garhett.
So now Emmett is stable and getting better. We are all beginning to relax and slow our breathing down. Scott is home working this week and we are getting ready for our trip to Europe. Thank goodness for the power of prayer to get you through the dark nights and to see the light and hope in the morning.
